Congratulations are in order to several female directors who landed awards at Los Angeles’ LGBT film festival Outfest, which closed on Sunday.

Among the big winners is documentarian Andrea Meyerson whose I Stand Corrected, about transgender jazz bassist Jennifer Leitham, won the Audience Award for Outstanding Documentary Feature. Meyerson, a director and producer, is the creator of the Laughing Matters… documentary series of films that highlights LGBT comics.

Also winning big is Chilean writer / director of the inventive and sensual feature Young and Wild, Marialy Rivas, who landed a special programming award for emerging talent. Young and Wild tells the true coming of age story of a young, bisexual blogger navigating her way through life under the Draconian rules of her Evangelical parents, specifically her mother.

The highly anticipated lesbian-themed Mosquita y Mari, a love story between two teen girls in the Huntington Park section of Los Angeles, earned its director Aurora Guerrero the audience award for Outstanding First U.S. Dramatic Feature Film.

Mosquita y Mari’s lead actress Finessa Pineda was awarded a jury prize for Outstanding Actress in a US Dramatic Feature Film.

Director Janella Lacson also landed an audience award for her short film The First Date. Meanwhile, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA), won the audience award for Outstanding Documentary Short Film.
