Ellen DeGeneres 'Files' Pro-Equality Brief with the Supreme Court

With Proposition 8 headed to the Supreme Court, more than four years since being upheld by California voters, hundreds of families, business, and celebrities from across the political spectrum are submitting pro-marriage equality briefs to the Supreme Court.

Today, Ellen DeGeneres posted her own brief, complete with that special Ellen flair we all adore.  

After opening with a joke about underwear, Ellen transitioned into her message about the significance of marriage equality. She expressed her love for her wife, Portia, and her sympathy for gay Californians who didn’t have the opportunity to marry during the window it was legal.  Still, Ellen talked about how much further the issue goes, saying, “Even though Portia and I got married in the short period of time when it was legal in California, there are 1,138 federal rights for married couples that we don’t have, including some that protect married people from losing their homes, or their savings or custody of their children.”

A recent field poll shows 61% of Californians in support of gay marriage, according to Reuters.  Ellen spoke to all voters, saying, “The truth is, Portia and I aren’t as different from you as you might think. We’re just trying to find happiness in the bodies and minds we were given, like everyone else.”

Wrapping up her articulate, yet tinged with her signature humor, she said, “In the words of Benjamin Franklin, ‘We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.’”
