WATCH: 'Orange Is The New Black' Features Lead Whose Lesbian Affair Landed Her Behind Bars

Orange is the New Black is the latest original series scheduled to debut (in its entirety) for instant streaming on Netflix on July 11. Based on the memoir of Piper Kerman's year spent in prison, the series stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a psuedo-straightlaced suburbanite who suddenly finds her world turned upside down when she lands in prison for carrying a suitcase full of drugs, one time, ten years ago, for her dealer of an ex-girlfriend.

Now straight and coupled with Larry Bloom (played by American Pie alum Jason Biggs), the series explores Piper's life behind bars, where her pretty, white-privileged face is suddenly a minority.

Orange is the latest project from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, and, judging by the trailer, could explore some Sapphic content. We'll hold off final judgment until we see the series, but we're hopeful that the show will treat same-sex desires as more than just the tired (not to mention patently unfunny) prison-rape joke.

Check out the trailer below, where we meet Piper, her family, and her "prison wife," who goes by the name "Crazy Eyes." And keep an ear out for some musical accompaniment from queer-favorite Rilo Kiley, and a guest-starring role from out trans actress Laverne Cox.
