During the movie's world premiere event in Hollywood last night, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 director James Gunn hinted at the possibility of a queer character being included in the popular Marvel franchise.

“Absolutely. I would love to be able to,” Gunn said when asked by reporters if he would make space in his movies for gay heroes. “We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”

Annoying plug aside, Gunn's comments fill us with a little bit of hope, and a whole lot of anxiety.

On one hand, the possibility of LGBT inclusion is always a nice thing to look forward to, especially in the male-, cishet-dominated superhero genre of media. But on the other hand, when you consider how small and insignificant the hyped-up "gay moments" in recent movies like Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers were, we can't help but be a little skeptical of Gunn's comments.

Let's hope that if there really is a gay character in the upcoming Guardians movie, they aren't treated like a small sidenote.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5. Watch the trailer in the video below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments and on Twitter
