PHOTOS: Living in Limbo - Lesbian Families in the Deep South

Working in series, Carolyn Sherer has explored a variety of issues of identity using a documentary approach. Sherer’s work has been featured internationally in numerous exhibits of photography and contemporary art. Her images are included in numerous private and museum collections.

"Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South" is a collection of portraits of her lesbian community with roots in Birmingham, Alabama.

In 2012 "Living in Limbo" opened in the heart of the civil rights movement at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI). The sheer courage of the participants and the upfront, unapologetic presentation of their relationships attracted nearly 17,000 viewers to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, from March — July 2012. Visitors from across the country saw the exhibition and were deeply moved by the common humanity evident with every photograph.

Alabama lacks a single law protecting the rights of the LGBT community. Living in this environment, naturally stories of pain need to be told. But just as important, there is a narrative of a powerful community that has persevered with strength and sometimes humor. A national conversation about LGBT rights is raging — and the southern lesbian voice has become part of it.

As part of their mission to advocate for human and civil rights through education, the BCRI is managing the travel of "Living in Limbo." The exhibition opened at its first travel venue, West Hollywood (WeHo) Public Library, in April 2013 as part of MOPLA (Month of Photography LA) and will be there through July 10th.
