5 Pet Movies That Will Probably Make You Cry

Pet movies always seem to hit us right in the feels, don’t they?

Maybe it’s the loyalty. The unconditional love. The complete innocence. The expressive faces. Whatever it is, pets have it all — and it makes for some pretty emotional storytelling, especially at the movies. In fact, some of the biggest sob-fests have been movies involving our pet friends (whether they be furry, scaled, feathered or something in between).

They made a lasting impact on our lives watching them as kids (maybe even scarred us for life), and many of them continue to affect us today. Many of us have pets of our own, and feel now, more than ever, the emotions associated with caring for a dependent little (or big) creature.

We take them to the vet, exercise them, give them treats and toys, shower them with love and provide delicious food — like Halo, Purely for Pets®. Halo only uses WHOLE meats (and no "meat meals" like chicken meal or by-product meal), so you know they're getting the nutrition nature intended. Plus, they donate to help a pet in need every time you make a purchase.

So sit back with your four-legged (or winged, or two-legged, or no-legged) friend and reminisce about these five pet tearjerkers.

Old Yeller
It’s an oldie, but a goodie! Or not so goodie, considering the brutal ending. Old Yeller seems to be the classic go-to example when we think about movies involving pets that scarred us for life. In fact, many of us saw it once, cried our little eyes out, and never watched it again! After all, why would we put ourselves through that a second time?

Marley & Me
A more recent example of a pet-related cry-inducer. It could even be considered the Old Yeller for a younger generation. Sure, the trailers tried not to spoil the ending, but the minute you see a movie about an adorable dog, you know there’s a good chance it’s going to end in a bunch of tears and crumpled tissues. And this movie lived up to those expectations!

Babe
Ok, so not all pet movies have to end in death for us to shed a tear or two! Babe is right up there with Wilbur as one of our favorite porcine heroes. From his cute little voice to his powerful story of perseverance, all we have to say is: “That’ll do, pig!”

How to Train Your Dragon 2
Yes, it’s animated; yes, it’s a sequel; and yes, it involves a mythical creature. But this is one movie that doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to tugging at the heartstrings! This magical sequel went to some pretty dark places and seeing the adorable dragon, Toothless, fall into mind-controlled evil mode was brutal to watch, even for the adults in the audience.

Homeward Bound
A true ‘90s classic! What kid of the era doesn’t remember reading the book, watching the movie, or both? Luckily, we had the wonderful voice cast of Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Don Ameche to bring to life our furry friends Chance, Sassy, and Shadow. But oh what a tearjerker it was!

We know there are plenty of other pet movies that brought you to tears — which ones did we miss? Grab some tissues, relive those memories and let us know!

And remember, keep your own cuddly pets safe, sound and free from tears — make sure they have a healthy diet, like the kind provided by Halo, Purely for Pets®!
