10 Unforgettable Times Women Rocked 2014

From Vicky Beeching coming out to Mary Lambert and Madonna, it was a good year in music.

2014 was another monumental year in the fight for LGBT equality, and this success in politics was reflected in the music from the LGBTQ community and its allies. A mass union of gay and straight couples at the Grammys, new music and new undertakings from some of our favorite artists, and another memorable moment from our favorite singer/acrobat made this year one to remember. Here are our Top 10 favorite moments from a few ladies who rocked 2014!

10.  Demi Lovato Shoots Music Video at LA Pride

This year, Demi Lovato served as the Grand Marshal for LA Pride and performed during the LA Pride Parade. The performance – and hundreds of proud parade marchers and watchers – were featured in he video for her dance hit “Really Don’t Care.” The video also features appearances from Shane Bitney Crone, Kat Graham, Perez Hilton, Travis Barker, and Matthew Scott Montgomery.

9. Melissa Etheridge and Queen Latifah Perform Together

On her 10th Anniversary since being diagnosed with breast cancer, lesbian royalty and music icon Melissa Etheridge appeared on the Queen Latifah show to discuss her life and her new album, This is M.E. After a solo performance, Etheridge was joined by Miss Latifah herself to cover The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. While her show is ending after this season, The Queen gave us a very memorable performance.

8. Tracy Chapman Serves as Juror at Sundance

Mega talented, multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman was on the jury at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The “Give Me One Reason” and “Fast Car” artist was a member of the U.S. Documentary Jury. At the Festival’s Awards Ceremony, she presented the U.S. Grand Jury Prize Documentary to “Rich Hill."

7. P!nk Kills It with Her Grammy’s Performance

Two years ago, Pink entertained and awed the Grammys audience live and at home with her acrobatic performance of “Glitter in the Air,” and this year, the pop sensation outdid herself. After another Cirque du Soleil-worthy routine, P!nk showed off her yoga skills before finishing her performance with an emotional rendition of “Just Give Me a Reason.” We certainly have more than one reason for thinking this feisty ally is simply the best.

6. Vicky Beeching Comes Out

This summer, Christian rock singer Vicky Beeching came out in an interview with The Independent, saying, “I feel certain God loves me just the way I am, and I have a huge sense of calling to communicate that to young people.” The 35-year-old beauty is also a brain, having studied theology at Oxford prior to her success on the American Christian music scene. She is best known for the song, “Glory to God Forever,” a worship anthem sung throughout Christian churches. While Beeching received support from many fans and admirers, the disclosure also earned her some to-be-expected negative backlash from some within the Christian community.

5.Troian Bellisario Stars in Beautiful Lesbian Love Story in The Head and the Heart Video

Indie folk-rock band The Head and the Heart used their video for “Another Story” to tell the story of a 1940’s era lesbian couple, struggling with their feelings in an oppressive society. The video featured Pretty Little Liars standout and SheWired favorite Troian Bellisario as one of the young lesbians. While the story ends tragically, Troian’s heartfelt performance is a memorable one. Now if only Spencer and Emily could kindle a romance…

4. Tegan and Sara perform at Club Skirts’ Dinah Shore

Women cheered with anticipation earlier this year when it was announced that Tegan and Sara would headline the world’s biggest girl party in Palm Springs. The lovely lesbian look-a-likes took the stage at the Palm Springs Convention Center and rocked for a screaming, mostly-lesbian crowd. Prior to the show, Sara Quin told Desert Outlook, “We're there to play the hits and make everybody feel like they're having the best night of their life.” They did not disappoint.

3. Jenny Lewis’ New Video Makes Lesbians Swoon

Jenny Lewis, the former frontwoman of Rilo Kiley with a cult-followed solo career, released her video for the song “Just One of the Guys” earlier this year. The video featured Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson rocking out and rocking some tracksuit inspired drag as a few of the guys themselves. A song preaching self-expression and the comforts of womanhood, the actresses helped bring the message to life – and gave us all sorts of confusing warm fuzzies.

2. Jennifer Lawrence Shows Her Range

The much anticipated third installment of The Hunger Games film franchise, Mockingjay Part 1, grossed a staggering $121 million in its opening weekend, continuing the series’ immense success at the box office. But a less expected success story from the film went to the film’s star, Jennifer Lawrence, whose performance of the District battle cry “Hanging Tree” debuted at Number 12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 List.

Mary Lambert Performs at theGrammys

We can’t get enough of Mary Lambert, and she gave us one more reason to love her and to love love at the 2014 Grammys. While performing the mega hit “Same Love” with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lambert sang her heart out while thirty-three couples – some of them gay couples – exchanged wedding rings. The singer was joined on stage by Madonna to celebrate the marriages. Lambert’s best year yet continued when her latest single, “Secrets” became her first solo Billboard Hot 100 hit.
