WATCH: Houston's Lesbian Mayor Reveals 'The Gay Agenda'

Speaking to the California Democratic Party over the weekend, Houston mayor Annise Parker embodied every right-wingers worst nightmare: She thanked the liberal California lawmakers for letting her marry her partner of more than two decades in California this January, and then she unveiled The Gay Agenda. 

Witty and personable with just a touch of southern drawl, Mayor Parker, the first openly LGBT mayor of one of the nation's top 10 most populous cities, told the Golden State Democrats that she had originally planned to open her remarks with a few jokes about Texas Republicans.

"But you've already seen Rick Perry, so I don't have to say a word," she quipped, earning laughter and applause from the audience.

Admitting that she doesn't know much about California politics, Parker nevertheless thanked the lawmakers in the room for passing the nation's first trans student equality and safety law, which guarantees trans and gender-nonconforming students have equal, safe access to the sports teams and facilities that correspond with their gender identity. 

"So let me thank you for a second thing: and that is for standing up for my transgender brothers and sisters — our kids — to make sure they're safe in school."

Then Parker got into the meat of her speech and invariably sent antigay right-wingers trembling in their boots. 

"I've been a lesbian activist for 40 years, and it's hard to break a habit," she says. "And I have been saying for 40 years, there is no such thing as the gay agenda. But I'm here to tell you that that is not true. There is a gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender agenda, and I'm going to tell you what it is."

"We want to be able to go to school in safety," continues Parker. "We want to be able to serve our country honorably. We want to be able to work at jobs we love so that we can pay taxes to the country that sustains us, and we want to protect the relationships and families that nurture us. That is the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender agenda."

Parker's full speech is worth watching, where she points out that Democrats have let Republicans control the conversation around faith, freedom, and family values for too long. Democrats, she notes, support family values "because we value all families,"  because they support true freedom of religion — including freedom from religion. Numerous times, Parker stumps for Texas gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis, as both are living proof that strong, progressive women can win elections — even in red states.
