Well, this just sucks… The story of the New Jersey waitress and former Marine who was stiffed on a tip by a family because she is a lesbian could be a hoax now that the family whose check was paraded around the media (including here) has come forward with their copy of the credit card receipt.
The story, as Dayna Morales, a server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J, told it went like this: She waited on a family with their two kids. Rather than tip her server on their $93 bill, they left Dayna an outrageous note that read, “I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I don’t agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life,” according to the receipt Dayna posted on Have a Gay Day’s Facebook page.
A public outcry over the purported discrimination ensued and people began to send tips to Dayna. She later made a statement that she would donate the money raised to the Wounded Warrior Project that helps veterans.
The family came forward with their copy of the credit card receipt that included an $18 tip. They also provided a copy of their credit card statement that shows a charge for $111.55 and not the $93.55 that just covers the bill. The family told NBC that the entire incident might have stemmed from the fact that they originally thought their server's name was Dan when they were seated at their table, and a name they called her by.
It’s easy enough to doctor a credit card receipt, but the credit card charge is harder to dispute. If the original story is true then it’s sad and if the family is telling the truth and Dayna made the story up it’s really sad for all of those people who are actually discriminated against.
