Argentine President Cristina Fernandez unveiled the commemorative currency on Wednesday. Fernandez is Argentina’s first female president and is a member of the Justicialist political party, an organization greatly influenced by Perón and her husband, Juan.
Perón is the first female to appear on a legal monetary note in Argentina. Even though the note is only on temporary commission, Fernandez has said she hopes to eventually make the bill a permanent fixture of Argentine culture.
In addition to serving as first lady, Perón also ran for the office of vice president, served as an activist of the poor, and founded the Female Peronist political party.
Perón died of cervical cancer at the age of 33 in 1952. Her life has been immortalized in both the Broadway show and the film, Evita.
