Kaitlyn Hunt, the 18-year-old high school senior and former head cheerleader from Sebastian River, Fla., broke her silence yesterday about the felony charges she's currently facing for having a consensual relationship with her 15-year-old girlfriend. The relationship began when both girls were minors — and on the same Varsity basketball team and in classes together — but when Hunt turned 18, her girlfriend's parents sent police officers to arrest Hunt, charging her with "lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12-16 years old."

On Wednesday, Hunt, her mother, and the family's attorney held a press conference outside the school from which Hunt has now been expelled, just weeks before her graduation. Then the trio appeared on MSNBC with Chris Hayes, to give one of their first on-air interviews since the story broke when Hunt's parents shared their daughter's plight on social media and various websites. A Facebook group called "Save Kate" has more than 45,000 members, and a Change.org petition calling on the state attorney general to stop prosecuting Hunt has almost 220,000 signatures.

Speaking with Hayes via Skype, Hunt said she was "overwhelmed" by the international outpouring of support, but that she's also "scared" about the charges which her attorney noted could require Hunt to register as a sex offender for life.
