An out lesbian couple in Kingston, Ontario, recently received a pair of bizarre and threatening letters demanding they leave the city or be subjected to violence, reports HuffPost Canada.

Addressed to "Lesbian bitches," the first page-long letter identifies the senders as "a small but dedicated group of Kingston residents devoted to removing the scourge of homosexuality in our city." The writers claim they have been following the couple for several weeks, and warn that if the couple does not relocate, the group is prepared to "use violence surgically to persuade people… MOVE, or else!" 

Kim Renders, a drama professor at Queen's University and HuffPost Canada blogger, posted the first letter to her Facebook page Friday. Renders contacted the Kingston Police department about the hateful note, and the department is investigating its source. The letter was delivered anonymously, signed only with the words "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, our saviour." 

Shortly after Renders posted the letter to Facebook and the image-sharing site Imgur, the couple received a second threatening letter. This time simply addressed to "lesbos," the letter explicitly threatens the women, saying some of the group's "younger members want to have some fun chasing 'lesbos.' We have bought them BB guns and today they are doing target practice so that they can hunt you down." The letter closes with a dire warning to "take our previous letter seriously or fun and games will turn into deadly serious action."

Adding to the terror, Canadian news site The Whig reports that a local HIV/AIDS resource office was recently targeted with BB pellets. It's unclear if the incidents are related, but it's definitely spooky. 

Friends and allies of Kingston's LGBT community rallied on Friday afternoon to show support for Susan Belyea and Karen Dubinsky, the couple who received the letters. 

"We appreciate the deluge of support and outrage and offers of assistance we have received from friends, family, acquaintances and strangers from all over," read a statement from the couple delivered at the rally. "Clearly this kind of hate has no place in our community and will not be tolerated."
