5 Reasons to Support the Warwick Rowers and Fight Homophobia

Standing up to homophobia is more important than ever before.

DRJedi

Standing up for what you believe in, fighting for equality, denouncing bullies and helping people live their authentic lives — all these things are more important than ever given the current turmoil in our country (and, frankly, the world).

Lucky for us, we have the incredibly sexy and wildly inclusive Warwick Rowers to help us along the way!

Just as they’ve done for years, the UK-based rowing team is gearing up to release their 2017 calendar — complete with all the tasteful naked goodness we’ve come to expect from photographer/producer Angus Malcolm. Proceeds go to the newly registered Sport Allies charity, promoting inclusion in sports, especially for those who may face exclusion based on gender or sexuality.

It’s important for the LGBT community to support its straight allies — here are just a few reasons why:

1. Homophobic attacks are on the rise

After Brexit the UK saw a 147% increase in homophobic-related attacks. Only time will tell if Trump’s presidency will have a similar effect in the United States, but let’s not wait to find out.

2. Today’s youth = tomorrow’s leaders

While the present may seem cloudy, we can plan for a brighter future. Educating the youth of today about the importance of inclusion and acceptance is critical if we hope for positive social change.

3. We can’t fight alone

For the LGBT community to successfully protect the freedoms we have and fight for continued equality, we need all the help we can get. Supporting politicians, artists, public figures, local and religious leaders, educators and professionals that champion equality and denounce homophobia let’s them know we care and appreciate them.

4. Being vocal and visible makes a difference

Just because we may be facing an uphill battle doesn’t mean we have to hide or be silent. In fact, being more visible and more vocal about the importance of equality is imperative. We need to let those who support us know we’re here and ready to stand up to opposition and homophobia wherever it appears — and we need to let those who attack us know we’re not going anywhere.

5. Butts

I mean, come on, a cute butt can turn a frown upside down, any day! So next time you’re feeling blue, take a peek at your Warwick Rowers 2017 calendar and let those cute cracks help you crack a smile. Fighting homophobia may not be easy, but a smile and a tight toosh sure does help!
