It's been a crazy weekend at Comic Con in San Diego, but from all the costumed madness and entertainment news there occasionally comes a truly heartwarming moment. The Orphan Black Panel encountered one such moving experience when a fan stepped up to explain just how much to role of openly lesbian scientist clone Cosima has changed her life.
"First of all, I wanted to thank you," says the fan. "Before I started watching the show, I was really in the closet and I was totally ashamed of who I was. I hated myself. I started watching the show and seeing Cosima and seeing that everything is not about her sexuality and that she is more than her sexuality. My parents, they weren't okay with me being gay." At this point, Tatiana's tearing up as the fan collects herself to continue.
"I started watching the show with my mom and it's helped us start to rebuild our relationship because she sees Cosima and she sees that it's okay and that people are more than their sexuality. So, I want to thank you for that." After a round of overwhelming applause, the question comes, " What's it like to have that effect on peoples' lives and know you're changing peoples' lives and making people more comfortable with who they are? You're saving lives. That's what you did for me. So, I just wanted to know what's that like?"
Tatiana's too overwhelmed for more than a short and sweet response, but Jordan Garvis who plays Felix goes on to eloquently discuss the importance of moving past of labels both onscreen and off.
