This week, in our ongoing series on lesbian and bisexual women you should know, we take a look at groundbreaking beauty Eve Salvail.
Who she is: An out Quebec-born model, actress, and DJ who catapulted to stardom in the 1990s.
What she accomplished: Salvail challenged beauty standards of the early '90s as an androgynous model with a shaved head that highlighted not only a flawless face but a bold dragon tattoo (the original Lisbeth Salander!). Standing out from Naomi, Christy, and Linda, Salvail was embraced by popular culture, walking runways, appearing on magazine covers, profiled on MTV's House of Style, and becoming the muse of Jean-Paul Gaultier. Salvail segued to film, appearing in movies like Pret-a-Porter, The Fifth Element, Celebrity, Hostage, and Zoolander. Salvail came out in Curve in 2007, and talked about being a lesbian on The Tyra Banks Show soon after.
A lifelong music-lover — she was singing lead in bands at 14 — Salvail moved on to DJing at major clubs and events from New York to Los Angeles. Salvail has recently provided the music as parties for Tag Heuer, Zac Posen, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Now residing in New York, the 42-year-old still occasionally models, most recently for Gaultier.
Choice quote: “In my heart, I feel I was always meant to create. But I'm in no rush. It's the journey that counts, and I plan to enjoy it one beat at a time.”
