5 Reasons You Should Watch (or Re-Watch) 'Veronica Mars' Now That the Movie Is Out!

You may have heard that there's a Veronica Mars MOVIE in the works! Here's why you should catch up STAT!

You may have heard a little tale earlier this year about a small Kickstarter for an old TV show. Okay, so maybe the creator and fan-based platform to fund and produce a new movie to tie up loose ends on the addicting TV show Veronica Mars broke almost every record for Kickstarter and was a huge success. The series, which has achieved cult status since it ended its three-season run in 2007 starred the smart and adorable Kristen Bell as a teenaged detective navigating high school hell. But why should you spend your precious time catching up on this little show that could?

Here are five reasons you should catch up on this outstanding show now that the movie is out!

1. Everyone Loves a Good Murder

It may seem brutal to say, but there is a reason that Law and Order ran for 20 years and that two of its five spin-offs are still running: people like playing along to help solve a mystery. And if that mystery happens to include murder and intrigue, well, even better. There are overarching murder cases in all three seasons of Veronica Mars – for which, of course, Veronica herself is the intrepid modern-day Nancy Drew battling against incompetent town sheriff Don Lamb (Michael Muhney) to solve the cases.

2. Kristen Bell Has Sass

Okay, so technically it’s her character Veronica Mars who can be called the smart aleck, but cut us some slack. Veronica – and her father, partner-in-crime Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III), and bad-boy Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) – made for some of the best one-liners around.

One of our favorite quotes is by Veronica’s father, Keith Mars: Veronica tells her father that the clients’ case they’re working on is “fuzzy and circumstantial”, to which her father says, “You know the odd thing? Those were also her very first words.”

3. The Show Has Heart

Speaking of Veronica’s father, former sheriff turned private investigator Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) is the heart of the show. Like most parents, he isn’t perfect, but that never prevents him from trying to be the best he can for his daughter, and often for her friends as well.

4. They Don’t Mess Around With Equality

Veronica Mars doesn’t focus on LGBT issues by any stretch of the imagination. None of the main characters are queer, and there are only a few minor characters that are gay. But when the series does touch on LGBT issues it’s always on point. During the first season, Veronica is asked to investigate the blackmail of gay students at her high school – and in the second season, a deceased student who was sent to a conversion camp. Not only that, but the show continually battles racial and ethnic stereotypes, as well as showing Veronica’s complete independence from needing (although not from wanting) a boyfriend.

5.  The Movie Is Out Now!

After the third season, creator Rob Thomas wrote a feature film script to wrap up a multitude of loose ends. Warner Bros. turned the script down, but fan encouragement brought around a Kickstarter this past March, which broke multiple records on the fundraising website and earned more than twice the stated goal.

Filming for the movie finished earlier this summer, and last month the cast premiered the first trailer at San Diego’s Comic-Con. And the movie is out in theaters today!
