Poison Ivy may not be joining the gang, but...

It looks like the upcoming Birds of Prey movie might be doubling down on its queer characters!

While we already heard that the film is rumored to be introducing the DC movie ‘verse’s first gay villain (a questionable choice), now reports are saying that Renee Montoya, who is a lesbian in the comics, is not only retaining her queerness for the movie, but will be in a same-sex relationship.

We Got This Covered says that they have heard from multiple sources that Montoya, a cop, will be playing a fellow law enforcement officer played by Ali Wong.

They also say the two will kiss.

The rumors aren’t quite confirmed yet, but it’s almost insane to imagine Birds of Prey without some sort of queer representation (ahem, looking at you, WB).

Unfortunately, we know that Poison Ivy won’t be joining the gang in this Birds of Prey film, so we won’t be getting a big screen representation of the way-better-than-the-Joker relationship between her and Harley Quinn — yet, anyway.

Margot Robbie, who plays Harley, previously gave an interview, saying “In some comics they convey [their relationship] as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple…I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I’m looking to explore that on screen.”

But while we wait to see if this portion of the franchise moves forward at all and ultimately brings in Poison Ivy to join Harley, it’s wonderful that we may actually get not only queer lady rep but WOC queer rep in the DCEU. That’s some progress.

Even if we’re also getting a suddenly gay baddie.
