The Fosters Recap: Mid-Season Premiere is Hip Hoppin', Heart Stoppin', and Custody Battlin'!

The Fosters is back and it's more intense than ever!

The Fosters returned to ABC Family in full force last night, and we're still reeling from just how real everything got. As you'll recall, when we left of Callie's half-sis Sophia had shredded the papers their father had signed that would allow Callie to be adopted by the Adams Fosters. However, now that the papers were destroyed, Robert Quinn had announced he regretted signing them anyway and that he didn't intend to re-sign. Callie blew up at him and apparently the fight had a pretty major impact, because tonight's episode kicked off with an ambulance arriving to care for Robert who had a pretty major panic attack. The Fosters are having their own kind of panic, however, as they try to deal with Robert's decision not to sign the papers. Just wondering; was an alternate title for The Fosters, "This Poor Callie Girl Will Never Catch A Break?" Because I'd totally buy that.

Because this is The Fosters, we will have to deal with Brallie drama for the rest of our lives, and Brandon and Callie are still desperately trying to get over their love connection. Brandon doesn't want Callie to concede to the Quinns, even if it means they can't mack on each other. Good choice, dude! Lena checks on Jude to make sure he's okay with everything going on, but quickly takes a tangent into that mysterious camping trip where something happened between Jude and Connor. She thanks him for being honest and that what he did "wasn't wrong, but wasn't appropriate on a school trip." Ooh, such mystery!

Stef tries to sit down with Robert's wife to hash out this whole Callie/Custody thing, but now Jill Quinn's on Team We're Gonna Adopt Her Instead Of You. Stef pleads with the family to get over it, but Robert announces he'll be petitioning the court for custody. Because everything's getting pretty heavy, it's time for a Mariana Dance Team Subplot to lighten the mood. Tia has been training Mariana for her solo during an upcoming dance competition, but she's feeling self-conscious. Luckily, she has her new bf Mat who's incredibly supportive of her. He is less supportive of Brandon and Lou, however, and believes that now they're dating it might ruin the band. Wait, Brandon and Lou are dating?! Is Brallie a thing of the past?! What are we supposed to believe?

Back at the house, Lena explodes at Stef for visiting the Quinns and is about to sleep on the couch before Stef stops her, telling her that they can't let the kids see them fight like that. She builds a pillow wall between them and forget Brallie - this is the couple we need to put our worried energy into. Back at school, Brandon discovers that a prestigious music camp is interested in his talents and attending could mean he could set his classical music career back on track post hand-smash. Connor and Jude reconcile after Connor lets him know he's not mad at him anymore, he only wishes he wouldn't tell his moms everything that happens. In most important news, however, after practicing for her dance competition super-hard, Mariana discovers that team captain Caitlyn has decided to switch her positon, throwing her off entirely. Such sabotage! Will Mariana ever recover? (Probably yes, because she's a star.)

Lena returns that night and tells the family that she got her job back at the school, but on the condition that she'll need to have a meeting with Jude, Connor, and Connor's dad to discuss what happened during the camping trip. During the meeting, they discuss how apparently after bed-check Connor and Jude had some girls into the tent and they made out with them. Connor's dad insists that's what he thought happened and he's not the homophobe they think he is. He even says he'll stop spanking Connor. But while things seem like they should be cleared, Connor is miffed at Jude for once again being honest about uncomfortable topics with his moms and calls him a "little bitch" before storming off. Not cool, Connor! Honesty is always the best policy!

Raging Monster Dance Team Captain Caitlyn announces that she'll be cutting Mariana's solo from the competition, and Tia is so offended she actually quits the team. Luckily, Mariana stays strong because heaven forbid we lose access to all this dance team drama. In slightly more important news the Quinns and Adams Fosters meet with the lawyer to discuss Callie's custody. Callie insists the Adams Fosters are her family but will accept the lawyer's request she meet with Robert once a week. However, she declares she will under no circumstances meet with Jill or Sophia. Guess who's not happy about this?

Mariana totally slays the dance competition with her team, only to quit the moment and ask Tia to start her own group with her instead. In fact, because Mariana qualified with her team, she can now move on with a different group. You go, girl! We're already excited for how killer that duo's going to be. Jesus, however, misses his sister's moment of glory to crash Anna's AA session, and learns that she's actually pregnant again. He keeps it to himself, but nothing Anna-tastic stays secret for long. Sophia visits Callie at work and begs her for forgiveness, even going as far as to say that if Callie doesn't forgive her, she'll kill herself. Callie dismisses her and Sophia does in fact step out in front of a car. There's just a minor crash and no injuries, but when the Quinns arrive, Callie spills the truth on what Sophia did. She then stands by to comfort the tearful Robert after the intense moment.

Back at the house, Callie confronts Brandon about his decision to go on tour with his band instead of go to the classical music camp. Brandon insists he chose it not because his girlfriend will be there, but because it sounds "freaking awesome." His tone is anything less than freaking awesome, however, and the conversation takes a turn into him admitting that he still has feelings for Callie, but he can't be with her because she only comes to him when she's in a bad place and he feels he can't trust her. Among, you know, other reasons. The episode ends with a PSA about suicide prevention, because ABC Family cares about its viewers like that. Yep, we've got a feeling this is going to be one intense season.
