Phyllis Nagy, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Carol, has yet another assignment on her crowded plate: She’s been tapped to adapt Rachel Kushner’s novel Telex From Cuba for a new TV series on which Nagy will also be showrunner and executive producer.

Paramount TV and the production company Anonymous Content are developing the series, Deadline Hollywood reports. The novel, a National Book Award finalist in 2008, is set in the American expatriate community in Cuba in the 1950s, shortly before the revolution led by Fidel Castro.

“These expat families, who ran Cuba’s sugar plantations and nickel mines, employed Cubans in their homes and imported Jamaican workers for the hardest jobs, while living completely separate lives from the natives,” Deadline notes.

“I am thrilled to begin work on bringing the complex, beautiful, colliding worlds of Rachel Kushner’s magnificent novel to dramatic life,” the site quotes Nagy as saying. “The political, social, and economic landscapes of Cuba in the 1950s is rich, exciting territory — and I look forward to exploring it all with Anonymous Content and Paramount Television.”

Rosalie Swedlin and Adam Shulman of Anonymous Content will join Nagy as executive producers.

Nagy’s other current projects include adapting two more novels for film: Melanie Raabe’s The Trap for TriStar and Paolo Maurensig’s The Luneburg Variation for Colin Firth’s production company, Deadline reports. She is also writing an original screenplay called Middle of Somewhere, portraying a week in the life of singer Dusty Springfield.
