Mitrice Richardson's Parents Reach Tenative $900,000 Settlement

Nearly two years after their daughter's disappearance and subsequent death, the parents of Mitrice Richardson have reached a tentative agreement to settle their lawsuits against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for $900,000. Richardson's parents and many others have criticized the sheriff's department for its handling of the case. Richardson (pictured), a lesbian who was 24 at the time, went missing in September 2009 after being released by the sheriff's Malibu station in the middle of the night without her car, cell phone, or purse.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin Fulfills Campaign Promise: Officiates Lesbian Wedding

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin fulfilled a campaign promise Wednesday when he presided over the wedding of a lesbian couple, making this event a first for a sitting U.S. governor. Shumlin, a first-term Democrat, pronounced Ann and Michele "Mitch" Beck married at a ceremony in his own office. At a meet and greet last June, the two approached him and thanked him for helping pass the gay marriage bill when he was state Senate President pro tempore. A year later he held the ceremony, during which he read a poem, after spending $100 to obtain a certificate as a "temporary officiant."

Holland Taylor to be Recognized for her HIV/AIDS Work

Two and A Half Men actress Holland Taylor will be honored for her long-standing support for social justice and HIV/AIDS at A Faire of the Heart, the annual fund raising gala of the Serra Project. Taylor, who famously played Peggy Peabody on The L Word, will receive the Aid for AIDS (AFA) Celebrity Trailblazer award for having shown a strong desire to make a difference and has given time, talent, and financial support for events such as Best in Drag Show, and as a celebrity judge to raise money for Aid for AIDS.

Homosexuality Awareness Test Riles Parents at a Catholic High School

A religion test covering students' knowledge of homosexuality administered at a Kitchener, Canada, Catholic high school has upset some Catholics and other religious conservatives. Some Catholics thought the test undermined church teachings on the subject. "This is a form of indoctrination whereby students come away with the belief that homosexual relationships are equal to heterosexual relationships," wrote Camilla Gunnarson on Right Side Up. "Have our teachers become social engineers?"
