Karamo Brown is using his platform to discuss a difficult topic with the hope that it might help others — his son’s overdose.

The Queer Eye host addresses the incident in a clip from an upcoming episode of his self-titled talk show, telling audience members that he’s “going to be very vulnerable.”

“Almost two years ago, I found my oldest son Jason lying on the floor, dying from a drug overdose,” he says tearfully. “I was terrified. I was about to lose my son. I didn’t know what to do. I was in shock.”

Brown says this is the first time he’s publicly discussed what happened with Jason, who is now 25, although he has previously been open about his untraditional journey into parenthood.

His high school girlfriend got pregnant but moved away and never told him about their child until he received a request for child support ten years later. He wound up getting full custody of Jason not long after, and eventually took custody of his half-brother, Chris, as well.

“It wasn’t until I became a dad that I asked myself how I would feel if my son had the same relationship with drugs and alcohol as I did,” Brown said. “I quit and have never looked back.”

But even the most well-intentioned parents who act as good role models can’t protect their kids from everything, and it sounds as if now both the reality star and his son are trying to find a way to use the struggles they’ve been through to help others. The clip also reveals that Jason will join Brown to sit down and chat during this upcoming episode of Karamo.

“For anybody else who’s out there going through this stuff, there are people who want to help you,” Brown said.
