Macfarlane moves to the big city and falls in love in the new queer fall-themed film.

Hallmark just announced its first very gay entry in its “Fall Into Love” program and we couldn’t be happier!

In the new film Notes of Autumn, which premieres next month, Luke Macfarlane of Bros fame plays best-selling author Leo who lives in the outskirts of British Columbia and finds himself in a bit of a writing slump as he tries to complete the next installment in his popular book series.

His best friend Ellie, played by Hallmark Channel vet Ashley Williams, is a classically trained pianist who is currently working at a hotel and living in the city instead of pursuing her passion because things “always seems to be getting things wrong when musical inspiration strikes,” according to the official synopsis.

Leo moves to the big city when the two best friends decide to swap places, giving him the opportunity to meet Ellie’s friend Matt (Peter Porte) who helps to open him up to new writing possibilities and love — swoon! Ellie too finds love when she meets Leo’s neighbor Sam (Marcus Rosner) who needs help with a musical performance for a local fundraiser.

“The journeys of these characters and the paths their relationships take are handled with tenderness, compassion and explored in meaningful ways,” said Bart Fisher, Vice President, Programming, Hallmark Media. “This movie celebrates the fall season in a fun, contemporary way and has something for everyone.”

The Hallmark Channel only premiered its first movie with a same sex couple back in 2020, so it's great to see the network famous for its heteronormative romantic films make strides in inclusivity and representation.

Also, ‘80s icon Debbie Gibson is one of the executive producers — what?!

“I'm so thrilled to have a creative voice during such an exciting time in Hallmark Channel’s programming,” Gibson said. “This is a special story that celebrates how love can blossom in the most unexpected ways.”

The film sounds like a gay Hallmark Channel version of the Kate Winslet/Cameron Diaz rom-com The Holiday and we’re here for it!

Notes of Autumn will premiere on the Hallmark Channel on September 16, 2023.
