Kiki and the MXfits premiered an exciting batch of Latinx talent at OutFest!

From the mind of filmmaker Natalia Leite and Emmy Award winner Jill Soloway comes Kiki and the MXfits, a short film following a clique of queer teens navigating the outskirts of high school life that premiered at Outfest earlier this month.

When Kiki, the transgender leader of their "crew of misfit bleacher brats," gets thrown in detention for using the girl's bathroom, it prompts the friends to stage a school-wide rebellion. We also meet Chiquilla, who—to her friend's dismay—decides to run for student government to get the attention of a crush.

It was important to Leite to show these teens not just as their identities, but as kids figuring out themselves and the world around them.

"I wanted to make a film that I wish I had seen as a teenager in high school," she told them. "I grew up in Brazil and struggled to see myself represented on TV and films. There were practically no films featuring queers, especially not in the Latinx community. And when there was a queer person in a movie the storyline focused on the struggles of being queer. I wanted to create a story that showed these kids having fun, getting into trouble, and being themselves."

The public responded it to the story immediately and it quickly went viral on Twitter. Leite hopes the attention will help Kiki and the MXfits get it turned into a webseries.

"We just need to prove to the people who hold the money in Hollywood that there is an audience for this type of story. So the more people share the film and talk about it, the higher the chances of it becoming a series. The power is also in the hands of the viewers!"
