Coming out to older relatives can be a particularly anxiety-inducing experience, but Noah Schnapp’s grandfather had the best response.
The Stranger Things star came out via TikTok in early January, posting a casual video and joking that everyone else in his life already knew before he actually told them.
More recently, he shared a text he received from his grandfather the same day.
“Hey noah I became aware today of your public announcement that you are gay,” it reads. “I just want you to know that I love you the same and I’m happy for you to be open and to be yourself.”
Schnapp’s grandfather further encouraged him to be “proud of who and what you are” and told him he loves him “to the moon and back.”
Although the actor has since deleted the TikTok, fans had initially expressed their happiness for him in the comments, with some even sharing their own struggles regarding coming out to their family.
“It’s been a year since I lost my late grandfather and I miss them dearly and wish I could’ve come out to them,” one viewer wrote, per E! News. “So glad you have a good support system.”
Schnapp’s coming out happened just months after Stranger Things finally seemed to confirm his character, Will Byers, is also gay, after years of speculation among fans that that was the case.
“I guess I’m more like Will than I thought,” Schnapp wrote at the time.
