This Awesome Video Shows 100 Years of Drag Kings in Two Minutes

From Victorian Era male impersonators to the boundary pushing kings of present day.

While drag queens have become a widely known and largely accepted part of pop culture, drag kings remain in a relatively unknown subculture. The Making of a King, a feature documentary currently raising money on Indiegogo, aims to pull drag kings' stories out of the shadows and into the spotlight. As part of their crowdfunding campaign, The Making of a King has released an awesome video highlighting 100 years of drag kings and male impersonators.[iframe https://giphy.com/embed/TmRnGgvPPg2oo allowfullscreen="" class=^{{"giphy-embed"}}^ frameborder="0" height="421" width="750"]The video starts with a glimpse at male impersonators in Victorian England when dapper drag kings like Hetty King were entertaining audiences in British music halls. Harlem Renaissance and Mafia era male impersonators are also highlighted.

Then, the video brings viewers through the 1980s and 1990s drag scenes, to the boy band inspired drag troupes of the early 2000s, and to the boundary pushing kings of present-day Los Angeles—the subculture The Making of a King profiles. [iframe https://giphy.com/embed/dKUTIsEvYkIFy allowfullscreen="" class=^{{"giphy-embed"}}^ frameborder="0" height="421" width="750"]The documentary focuses on drag kings Landon Cider, Miles Long, Havok Von Doom, Ivory Onyx, Phantom, and Lucky Johnson—kings who represent a diverse range of styles, identities, and approaches to challenging gender norms through drag.
