Oh, the limits of the transgender imagination know no bounds, and I think that’s beautiful. The latest trans headcanon? Everyone’s favorite spider-bitten superhero: Peter Parker, who is actually, in fact, Petra Parker, at least according to trans stans of the Marvel franchise.
Recently, a gender-swapped version of the popular superhero, Petra Parker, has been going viral, with fan-made images of a Spider-Woman-like character proliferating on subreddits and X threads. But where exactly did this diva come from?
According to internet history archive Know Your Meme, Petra Parker is actually an established Marvel superhero best-known for being featured in Ultimate Spider-Man. In the Spider-Verse franchise, her backstory is revealed as the daughter of Queen Mysteria. In the comics, she is not transgender.
But much like all trans-coded characters, trans people online are quick to take characters and run with them, creating infinitely more interesting (and queerer) lore. The currently circulating version of Petra Parker appears to be adapted from a minor superhero by the name of Spinstress, showing a hypothetical timeline in which Spider-Man transitioned.
Per KYM, user @Zappyz_ posted about the idea of J. Jonah Jameson reacting to Spider-Man transitioning. The idea only exploded from there, as other users created their own cartoons and fan art of Petra Parker navigating transition on top of her superhero duties.
“GET TRANS FEMS COSPLAYING AS PETRA PARKER ON MY DESK BY TOMORROW !!!” one user wrote.

“She’s been showing up on my timeline for days, I had to draw Petra Parker ❤️,” another user on X wrote, accompanied with drawings of the character.

“im gonna be honest i don't think i truly realized how much spider-man can work as a transfem allegory,” @Zappyz_ wrote in reaction to the influx of fan images all spurred from their original cartoon.

This is far from the first time trans people online have taken inspiration from a character in a series and interpreted their experience as a trans allegory, lest we forget the masterpiece that is The Matrix series. It speaks to the ingenuity of trans creatives online and the importance fandoms can hold in our hearts. If Petra Parker got her own television series, I for one would want 10 seasons minimum.
