Sometimes fan campaigns do win the day

You can’t keep a good Warrior Nun down — especially one with the kind of fan base this series has.

The show, which debuted on Netflix, quickly garnered a loyal audience and ran for two seasons before its shock cancellation last year. It follows a group of nuns who are trained to fight demons, including Ava (Alba Baptista), who was chosen as the halo bearer. Her story of triumph and romance with Sister Beatrice made Warrior Nun a favorite, especially for Sapphics.

While it seemed as though the cancellation would mark the end of the story, a passionate fan campaign was waged online with viral petitions, billboards, and even a short documentary showing how passionate the fan base remained.

It seemed to have paid off in June, when series creator Simon Barry shared the exciting and unbelievable news on Twitter. “Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion, and amazing efforts - #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON! Thank you!!” wrote Barry.

The question was, in what form would it be returning? Netflix was silent on whether or not there would be a new season. Some speculated that perhaps it would be coming back as a comic, ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Today we finally got the answer, and it’s huge.

Dean English, the show’s executive producer, announced in a video on warriornunsaved.com that the story would be back in a new form: a trilogy of films. “You guys really make it all worthwhile. So, thank you so much for your continued support,” he began. “I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three!”

English added that they can’t share too much plot-wise now because of the ongoing Hollywood strikes, but he did drop some exciting hints about the future of the franchise. “Some may ask: ‘Does this infer that there’s going to be a universe being launched by Warrior Nun, which could expand into films and TV series following characters we already know?’ The answer to that question is yes, and there will be more details in the future,” he revealed.

Warrior Nun Saved August 15 Announcement

Naturally, the fans are beside themselves with joy over the news — and proud of their accomplishment.
