Everything has been leading up to this for T.K. and Carlos.

The upcoming season four finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star has fans on edge as it promises two things — a “big gay wedding” and tragedy.

T.K. Strand (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos Reyes (Rafael Silva) got engaged at the end of season three, after the typical television road of ups and downs in their relationship. For viewers, it was a full circle moment for the former, whose time on the series started with a failed proposal to a boyfriend who turned out to be in love with someone else in the pilot episode.

But this proposal went better for the fan favorite character, and the latest season has allowed a slow build-up towards the big day. Considering the show revolves around first responders — T.K. is a firefighter and Carlos a police officer — there has always felt like little chance the wedding would go off without a hitch.

Showrunner Tim Minear teased the juxtaposition to come in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, acknowledging the fan’s enthusiasm but betraying a certain hesitance in knowing “you can’t please everybody.”

“It’s going to be a beautiful wedding — we shot it already and I think it’s going to be really emotional,” he said. “Although I don’t know if I want to tease that, because what’s going to really happen is tragedy will strike and the entire thing will be put in question.”

The episode title and synopses don’t give away much more than that, other than perhaps a subtle warning in the episode title — “In Sickness and In Health.”

But Minear did mention a wedding reception, which provides hope that whatever tragedy comes about isn’t dire enough to stop the whole wedding from taking place.

“I think overall people are going to be moved. I mean, the cast was. There was a moment during the reception that plays into sort of the last minutes of the episode, and the entire cast was in tears,” he recalled. “They weren’t acting. They were just all incredibly moved.”

The two-hour season finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star will air on Tuesday, May 16 on FOX.
