Season four of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is going to be wild, cats.

High School Musical fans were thrilled when it was revealed that the upcoming season of the Disney+ series would go so meta that it might actually bring some of the original cast back to play — and now we’re getting details on some of the names swinging by the show.

Season four of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will revolve around the students of East High putting on a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year while a (fictional) High School Musical 4 is being filmed at their school with the original cast.

If you don’t watch the show, your brain might be totally broken just from trying to follow that sentence. The series itself imagines a world where High School Musical: The Musical is, in fact, a movie, and was shot at East High, where our current crop of characters go to school. That means Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and the rest of the og gang are all real people who acted in a Disney movie once upon a time…in other words, real life.

Although the two leads who sent this franchise soaring and flying haven’t been announced among those making a cameo in the upcoming season — yet — Corbin Blue, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed, and Kaycee Stroh are all confirmed to be playing themselves…reprising their roles…in the fictional High School Musical 4…in the world of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Got it?

But just because Efron, Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale haven’t been announced as returning to the world of the Wildcats doesn’t mean we can totally rule them out. In fact, Efron shared a pic from the now-iconic filming location earlier this summer — while Hudgens shared a video from the same spot a month earlier — sparking rumors of a return.

It seems unlikely HSM:TM:TS would show all their cards up top, so we’ll keep anxiously awaiting more exciting casting news until season four is wrapped and available on Disney+ for our viewing pleasure. After all, what’s High School Musical without Troy, Gabriella, and Sharpay? Erm, Zac, Vanessa, and Ashley? Whoever they’ll be in this version of East High reality!
