We officially have a new favorite movie to look forward to in 2017. As reported by Variety, Rachel McAdams is in negotiations to join the cast of Disobedience opposite star and co-producer Rachel Weisz, completing what is pretty much the cinematic power couple of our dreams. The film is based on Naomi Alderman's novel of the same name and, according to Variety's description, it's going to be pretty intense:
"The story follows a young woman (Weisz) who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after learning about the death of her estranged father. She causes an upheaval in the quiet community when she rekindles a repressed love with her best friend – a woman now married to her cousin. McAdams will play the best friend in the pic."
Consider us hooked. Both Rachels Weisz and McAdams are coming off of incredibly strong years, with Weisz starring in an overwhelming amount of films including The Lobster and Denial, and McAdams taking starring roles in HBO's acclaimed series True Detective and last year's Best Picture winner Spotlight.
Disobedience will be directed by Sebastian Lelio, who co-wrote the script with Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Co-producers alongside Weisz include Ed Guiney's Element Pictures, Frida Torresblanco's Braven Films, and Film 4. We don't want to get our hopes up too soon, but after Carol was brutally left out of the Best Picture category in last year's Oscar race, could Disobedience offer another crack at the title? We'll have to wait and see - and you best believe we'll be counting the days!
