Theater kids, rejoice! The highly-anticipated, live-action film adaptation of Broadway's long-running, award-winning musical Wicked is one step closer to becoming a reality because the film has finally found itself a director!
According to close sources from a report in Deadline, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is being tapped to helm the project from Universal, with a screenplay by book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, and production from Marc Platt (Dear Evan Hansen and The Politician star Ben Platt's dad).
As Vulture points out, the Wicked film has been in the works for quite some time now and has been delayed multiple times, so lovers of the Tony-winning, fan-favorite musical that inspired a whole generation of Broadway performers can breathe a little sigh of relief now that the movie is one step closer to actually becoming reality! And considering Jon M. Chu has already directed Warner Bros.' upcoming film adaptation of In the Heights, another beloved stage production, Wicked is in very good hands!
