Representation matters – and Halle Bailey as Ariel is giving us everything!

Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid has released its first teaser, and reaction videos are starting to pop up all over social media. On Monday, September 12, Bailey re-shared a compilation of several reaction clips featuring young Black girls watching the teaser for the first time.

The compilation features young Black girls watching the teaser and having the sweetest reactions to seeing Bailey playing the live-action version of Ariel. “She’s Black!” a wide-eyed, giddy girl says to the camera. “Mommy! She’s brown like me,” says another. Other girls watch the teaser and just smile – clearly speechless.

“People have been sending these reactions to me all weekend,” Bailey wrote in a tweet, “and I’m truly in awe. This means the world to me.”

The cast of Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid also features Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle. In turn, legendary comedy star Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula – the ultimate queer icon within the Disney universe.

This live-action version will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine, Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) with a screenplay from David Magee (Life of Pi) and Jane Goldman (X-Men: Days of Future Past). Alan Menken is involved with the music, and high-profile names such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Marc Platt are attached as producers.

Bailey looks absolutely perfect as Ariel, and fans can’t wait to watch The Little Mermaid next year!

The Little Mermaid opens May 26, 2023 in theaters.
