“She is somebody who loves everything,” Al Jean remarked.

Lisa Simpson might be queer after all.

Over the years, it’s been heavily hinted on The Simpsons that Lisa is bisexual. For example, a fortune teller once told Lisa that she had a 42% chance of having a boyfriend and a 72% chance of having a girlfriend in the future. “I like those odds,” the character replied.

The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean recently revealed in an interview that he also believes in the “possibility” that Lisa is indeed a queer character. He told Digital Spy, “In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, that is definitely a possibility for Lisa's life. She is open and, you know, somebody who loves everything. Why not?”

On the other hand, Jean also noted that there are no current plans of exploring Lisa’s queerness on The Simpsons in the foreseeable future.

This isn’t the first time that Jean comments on Lisa’s potential dating preferences. In 2017, the showrunner told THR that Lisa “might end up with a woman” when she grows up. He then told Metro in 2019, “I see Lisa as president and possibly polyamorous.”

Many diehard fans of The Simpsons already consider Lisa to be canonically bisexual, but Jean’s latest statement suggests that the writers of the series still only see it as a “possibility.” But who knows – maybe future storylines will make that even clearer for casual viewers as well.

The Simpsons season 34 airs Sundays on Fox.
