A restaurant in Washington, D.C. has been fined $7,000 for asking a transgender woman for ID in order to use the bathroom.

Charlotte Clymer was at Cuba Libre for a bachelorette party last summer when she decided to make a quick trip to the ladies’ room. She said an employee followed her into the bathroom and a manager stopped her on the way out to request ID.

“When I asked why, he said that ‘female’ must be on an ID to use the women’s restroom,” Clymer said.

The D.C. Human Rights Act expressly states that discrimination on the basis of gender identity is against the law. This includes stopping people from using the bathroom that matches their gender.

Clymer attempted to pull up the law on her phone to show the manager, but he insisted she was wrong and was asked to leave.

Now, Cuba Libre will be required to pay the $7,000 fine as well as hold training for their employees to ensure that they are aware of and following the anti-discrimination act.

The restaurant has fired the employee and manager involved in the situation and apologized for what happened to Clymer.

“Our focus now is to help ensure safety for D.C.’s transgender community at all area restaurants,” said the statement released by the restaurant.
