The Majority Wins Only If the Majority Votes, Says Powerful PSA

"...democracy only works if the people participate."

An amazing new public service announcement reminds us that the majority rules—and the majority doesn't want bigots in charge.

The intersectional, stripped-down PSA reminds us that statistically, the majority of Americans agree with the values that are foreign to the current administration and Congress, including freedom of the press, marriage equality, fighting climate change, abortion rights, and humane immigration policies.

"We created this spot to encourage voter turnout, because democracy only works if the people participate," John Henry Kurtz, one of the producers that crafted the PSA, told PRIDE. He also noted that less than 37 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the last midterm elections.

"Americans disagree on many things, but the majority of us share values and goals central to the health and well-being of our democracy," explained Kurtz. "A ban on assault weapons, marriage equality, universal healthcare—these are all things that the majority of us want. These are things that our country could have, if only the majority would vote."

"There is solid support in this country for marriage equality, and despite our current conservative government, people’s actual opinions have a progressive momentum, especially in relation to LGBTQ rights," agreed director Kyle Ruddick.
