Recently articles about the new masculinity, masculism, and the anti-feminist diatribes of the religious neo-cons have started to grate on Diana Cage's nerves. New masculinity, a buzz term with a nebulous meaning and various interpretations, has been co-opted by organizations like anti-gay Focus on the Family as a call to men to be more “manly.”

At last count, my wife and I know 13 lesbian couples in the Bay Area that have recently had a baby, are currently pregnant, or are in the process of trying to conceive. Each one of these couples experienced, or are hoping to experience, a biological birth.

Nothing is wrong with my real family.  Got a mom and dad -- decent, loving, caring people.  But once I came out as gay, things changed, and now that I have a child of my own, whom I am raising with my partner and the baby’s father, a gay man, I have found another family that I didn’t even know I needed.

We do have some real-life celebrity lesbian moms who are terrific role models like Jodie, Rosie, Melissa and Cynthia Nixon, but when it comes to those powerful characters of the serial dramas that we tune into each week, I yearn for a gay version of Rosanne who shows what motherhood is really like.  

Forget about harnesses and carabiners and, you know, general safety. This 22-month-old girl needs her dollies NOW.
