The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it will not defend section three of the 15-year-old Defense of Marriage Act in federal court after a directive from President Barack Obama. Two lawsuits, Pedersen v. OPM and Windsor v. United States, challenge section three of the law passed in 1996. U.S. attorney general Eric Holder said in a statement that the decision to stop defending DOMA in these and other cases hinged on Obama's recent decision that the law is unconstitutional.

Writer and director Nicole Conn, of Claire of the Moon and Little Man fame, has gone for a record-breaking Hollywood screen kiss in her new film Elena Undone, currently making the film fest rounds. The story hinges on Elena -- 24’s Necar Zadegan -- who’s married to an outspoken, anti-gay pastor and who’s life becomes “undone” when she’s beguiled by out lesbian writer Peyton (Tracie Dinwiddie).

Reports indicate a jury has been unable to come to a decision in the murder trial of gay teen Lawrence King, who was shot twice in the head by a classmate in February 2008. The Los Angeles Times says the 12-member jury is hung and that a mistrial will likely be declared. The two-month case has hinged on whether 17-year-old McInerney should be convicted of first-degree murder with hate crime charges or voluntary manslaughter. The former charge would net McInerney at least 53 years in prison, the latter, only about 20.

A source close to Lady Gaga confirms to The Advocate that the entertainer has dissolved her deal with Target over the chain's controversial political donations. "She and Target didn't see eye to eye on Target's policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community," the source tells The Advocate exclusively.

Advocates want an apology for a Saturday Night Live skit that mocks the transition of transgender women. The piece, which aired over the weekend, represented a fake ad for “Estro-Maxx,” a hormone replacement therapy. It featured men with facial hair wearing dresses. The skit has drawn denunciations from the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, Media Advocates Giving National Equality to Transsexual and Transgender People (MAGNET) and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which called for an apology from Comcast and NBC and the piece’s removal.

Gay marriage foes jumped at the chance to appeal Judge Vaughn Walker's decision striking down Prop. 8 and formally filed an appeal Thursday morning. If heard, the case will head to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has no deadlines to hear the case. After the 9th Circuit does makes its decision, the Perry v. Schwarzenegger case will almost certainly land in the lap of the Supreme Court.
