We updated last year’s Top Hot Butches list to look at the women who’ve stirred our loins this year besides the usual butchy suspects like Rachel Maddow (who, of course, would top this list if you all voted), Wanda Sykes, and Ellen DeGeneres. Since butchy gals of all persuasions still get the short shift even in lesbian media we figured we’d profile 10 butch women you should have gotten to know more of in 2012.

It's been a big year for out women in the news, from the election of the first out U.S. Senator — who just happens to be a lesbian from Wisconsin — to the House of Representatives' first bisexual member, or Oregon's first out lesbian Speaker of the House.

The second year of the 2010s will be remembered for the deaths of Elizabeth Taylor and Osama bin Laden, the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the Arab spring and Greek drama. It should also be remembered as an astounding year for queer music—when it came to lesbian (and trans) music of 2011, there was practically an embarrassment of riches. Here are the highlights:
