Last season we patiently waited for Supergirl to get a queer character. While Supergirl/Kara (Melissa Benoist) is firmly embroiled in the traditional love triangle with male characters Jimmy Olson (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn (Jeremy Jordan), we were longing for some CW-style superhero queerness for Supergirl. After all, super gay producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler  (Glee, The New Normal) are both involved in the series.  Our bets/hopes were on Kara’s sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) to come out, but alas, our hopes were dashed. Now that Supergirl has left CBS and is moving to The CW, there is hope on the horizon for LGBTs in National City! Floriana Lima is set to join the cast as Maggie Sawyer, a police detective who specializes in alien-related cases, according to EW.

First introduced to the DC universe in 1987, Sawyer fought crime in Metropolis in several Superman titles. She became one of the first LGBT characters ever in the DC world and even had a relationship with superhero Batwoman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lima, who starred in The Family, Allegiance, and The Mob Doctor, joins Supergirl’s second season along with Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Kara’s cousin. If that’s not enough, TV’s famed Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, also joins the cast as the President of the United States.

We could not be more excited about National City getting it’s first major out character, and we’re still hopeful that Kara’s sister Alex might come around!
