The weight of growing up famous and being gay.

As he prepared to come out as a gay man to the entire world, Greg Mathis Jr – the son of Judge Mathis and star of Mathis Family Matters ­– enlisted the help of his friend, EJ Johnson. After all, EJ went through a very similar situation when he came out as gay after being best known as the son of NBA legend Magic Johnson.

During a conversation filmed for E!’s Mathis Family Matters, Greg Jr and EJ talked about the pressures of growing up in very well-known families like theirs and then having to come out as gay in the public eye. Greg Jr also talked about the fact that many of his father’s fans tend to be more conservative, which made his situation even more complex.

In turn, EJ reflected on how strange it was to hear from Greg Jr that he was still in the closet in recent years. After all, the two of them had been friends for a long time and had traveled the world together, so EJ assumed that Greg Jr had already made peace with coming out a long time ago.

These scenes are only airing now on Mathis Family Matters, but they were obviously filmed a while ago. Presently, Greg Jr has already come out to the world and has shared several pictures with his boyfriend, Elliott Cooper, on Instagram.

In February, Greg Jr and Cooper were featured in the NFL’s “A Night of Pride” event in partnership with GLAAD. When Judge Greg Mathis got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May, Greg Jr also attended the event with Cooper. Needless to say, things are going great for Greg Jr since coming as gay.
