After going on a homophobic rant at a Houston-area church last week (one where she basically called anyone living with the "homosexual spirit" perverted), gospel singer Kim Burrell has been receiving major backlash from the LGBT community and it's many Hollywood allies, the likes of which include singer-songwriter/actress Janelle Monáe.
Monáe, who stars in Hidden Figures, a recently-released feature film about three African-American women at NASA whose work helped launch US astronaut John Glenn into space back in 1962, took to her Instagram account to respond to all of the negativity that came after Burrell (who sings a song on the Hidden Figures soundtrack) made her comments.
"I shouldn't even have to post this as you guys should already know where I stand but If you do not pls know I unequivocally repudiate ANY AND ALL hateful comments against the LGBTQ community," Monáe said in her post.
She continued:
"I am personally beyond exhausted by the ignorance and bigotry living in some people. At times I want to punch and I want to slap a lot of people when I read and hear the shit that comes out their mouthes !!! I will rejoice when folks stop thinking they ARE GOD, Jesus' assistant, picking and choosing what "sins" are acceptable in the Bible, and using the Bible as a whip!"
Although Burrell later tried to back-pedal from her original comments in a follow-up interview with Us Weekly, it didn't stop other A-Listers from also reacting to her anti-LGBT hate. Out lesbian and American talk show mogul Ellen DeGeneres confirmed via Twitter earlier today that a slated performance of Burrell's on her show was officially canceled.
"My advice: If your religion is causing you to spew out words of hate, judge, or look down on others because of who one loves then you need to change it. And fast," Monáe continues in her post. "If the religion don't make you are more loving or better person, ditch it."
