Lea DeLaria Is Engaged

Her wedding to Chelsea Fairless 'will be the event of the season, or a total shit show,' DeLaria promises.

Lea DeLaria has gotten engaged to her longtime girlfriend, fashion editor Chelsea Fairless.

“Despite their concerns about the patriarchal confines of marriage, actor / singer Lea DeLaria & editrix Chelsea Fairless of Brooklyn, New York are pleased to announce their engagement,” DeLaria posted today on her Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. “No date has been set for the impending nuptials but it’s safe to say that it will be the event of the season, or a total shit show.”

A photo accompanying the post showed DeLaria and Fairless with Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor. It’s a doctored image that was originally from Liza Minnelli and David Gest’s wedding.

Actually, DeLaria and Fairless’s wedding is likely to be just as star-studded — DeLaria told E! Online that Sandra Bernhard will officiate and Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be best man. Both are close friends of hers, she said.

DeLaria also announced the engagement last night during her performance in the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center in New York City, E! reports. She proposed to Fairless almost two weeks ago, January 25, at the Netflix party the night of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where DeLaria’s show Orange Is the New Black won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

“Everyone saw how emotional I was at the SAG Awards,” DeLaria, who plays Big Boo on OITNB, told E! “I was so filled with love. I turned to her at the Netflix party that night and asked her to marry me.” They announced their engagement to friends that night but kept it “pretty hush-hush” since then, DeLaria said.

They plan to have a long engagement and get married in the summertime, possibly July 2016, so the entire OITNB cast can attend. The two met because of the show — Fairless is a close friend of Emma Myles, who plays Leanne Taylor on the series. “She introduced us and we’ve been together ever since,” DeLaria told E! “It’s been two and a half years.”
