Long before it was a cliché, lesbians’ devotion to their pets may have been because of cats and dogs unique abilities to bond with their owners. While some people might reject or discriminate against LGBT individuals, your furry friend never would.
And the gay community is not alone in being pet crazy. PBS’ Nature program devoted an entire episode, the result of 10 months of video research and production, to Why We Love Our Pets. More than companion animals, Americans keep over 73 million dogs and 90 million cats in their homes as best friends, soul mates, family members -- and even surrogate children. The bond with a pet is one of the most enduring and intimate relationships of our lives. PBS set out to figure out why we are so attached to our pets with the help of experts including animal behavior specialists, evolutionary biologists, veterinarians, and pet owners.
