Television has become the go-to spot for terrific actresses. Now Sigourney Weaver joins the increasing number of Oscar bait thespians like Glenn Close, Sally Field and Jessica Lange who’ve made the leap to the small screen with Weaver’s Political Animals debuting on USA this July 15, and running for five episodes, according to Deadline.

The Alien and Gorillas in the Mist star plays Secretary of State Elaine Barrish, who also happens to be the President’s ex-wife, in producer Greg Berlanti’s (Brothers and Sisters, No Ordinary Family, Dawson’s Creek) insidery look at the first family and the people that surround them.

"I took this job as secretary of state because I feel I can make a difference," Elaine says in the show’s trailer. "Eleanor Roosevelt, Cleopatra, Elizabeth I, that's the kind of company I want to keep."

The always welcome Carla Gugino plays a D.C. journalist embroiled with the first family, while Requiem for a Dream’s Ellen Burstyn plays’ Elaine’s mother.

Dylan Baker, Ciaran Hinds, Roger Bart and Dan Futterman also star.
