The Kids Are All Right director Lisa Cholodenko has been elected to the Academy’s Board of Governors, the powerhouse behind the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the rules of the Oscars, TheWrap reports.

Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right, about a family headed by a lesbian couple, earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture at the 83rd Academy Awards. Much like the characters in the film, she and her partner, musician Wendy Melvoin, have a son by an anonymous sperm donor.

Cholodenko also wrote and directed the 1998 independent film High Art about a young photographer’s affair with a woman, the 2002 drama Laurel Canyon, and a number of other films over the past two decades. She wrote an episode of The L Word in 2005.

The 43-person Board of Governors, comprised of representatives from each of the Academy’s 15 branches, has ultimate authority over matters of AMPAS, including corporate management, control and general policies.

Governors normally serve terms of three years, but director Paul Mazursky stepped down from his seat with two years to go. Cholodenko will serve the remainder of his term.
