It’s the end of an era now that Sandra Oh has announced she is leaving Grey’s Anatomy. But fans of the acerbic Dr. Cristina Yang have at least the upcoming 10th season to prepare to bid her farewell.

Oh announced she will exit the series to pursue other opportunities, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," Oh told THR. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey's writers to think of why she's going to go."

Since the show’s premiere in 2005 Oh’s Yang has been an integral piece of the Grey’s universe as a nearly impenetrable but brilliant heart surgeon who is also Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) “person.”

The departure is something Oh has considered for some time, according to THR. She announced she’d be leaving to fellow cast members at a table read last week.

Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes has known about Oh’s decision for some time and has fully supported her, Oh told THR.

There is no word yet as to how the writers will write Cristina out of the show, but we’re confident Rhimes and Co. will find some new and tragic way to send her off.
