'Glee'cap: Once Upon A Mattress

'Glee'cap: Once Upon A Mattress

Out lesbian Jane Lynch's Glee character Sue Sylvester is back causing trouble for the Glee Club. It’s yearbook picture day at McKinley High, and it’s got everyone’s nerves up. Shue finds out that Emma can’t make Glee’s sectionals performance because Ken scheduled their wedding (purposefully?) on the same day, Glee Club doesn't want to get defaced in the yearbook, and they end up in a professional mattress commercial.

Welcome back to Gleecaps! It’s yearbook picture day at McKinley High, and it’s got everyone’s nerves up. Emma, Ken, and Shue sit in the cafeteria as Shue finds out that Emma can’t make Glee’s sectionals performance because Ken scheduled their wedding [purposefully?] on the same day. Sue enters, looking like she’s been punched in both eyes, and explains that she had a quick eye lift for the photo, and also had her tear ducts removed because she “wasn’t usin’ ‘em.”

The Glee kids don’t want their picture in the yearbook, as the Glee photo always gets defaced, even though Shue thinks it’s unfair, and wants the kids to be proud of themselves and proud of their club. He writes a $352 check for a quarter page ad, that only fits 2 Glee members.

In her constant struggle for ultimate school-involvement, Rachel nominates herself as Captain, and the Glee club gives her their unanimous approval, knowing that she’ll be defaced, not them. She hounds everyone in the club to be her co-captain, as the photo needs two representatives, and eventually, dreamboat Finn agrees.

Meanwhile, Quinn feels left out by her former Cheerios. She vows that she won’t be lonely anymore, and she will wear her uniform again, getting back on the squad and making it for the Cheerios team picture. In the photo room however, Rachel is without her new co-captain Finn, who was assaulted in the locker room by football bullies, making him feel badly about being in the picture. After a brief sadness, she collects herself and smiles perfectly for the camera. The photographer is in a rush to get out, as he explains to Rachel that he’s shooting a commercial. Of course, Rachel exhibits her exceptional acting skills by crying on cue, and just like magic, she gets all the glee kids to star in his commercial selling – MATTRESSES!

The climax of this episode is when Shue finds out that Terry’s been lying about her pregnancy. He storms into the kitchen, dares her to tell him the truth, and then rips her baby bump off and throws it at her in an act of rage. All I could think was IT’S ABOUT TIME. Thirteen episodes of this and I was about at my wit’s end.

Things go from bad to worse when Sue sees the mattress commercial, consults her trusty Sectionals handbook, and tells principal Figgins and Shue that Glee is disqualified, because they engaged in an act of “professionalism” and were paid for it – in mattresses of course. Since Shue slept on one of the mattresses in his office after leaving Terry, he took the bullet, and sadly will not be joining Glee at Sectionals. And in a last act of blackmail and desperation, Quinn visits Sue’s office, and let’s her know that if she doesn’t give Glee a full page photo in the yearbook, she’ll go to the principal and tell him that the Cheerios have been paid with professional swag for years. She agrees, and the Glee kids smile as their photo is sadly defaced, making this episode of Glee one of the saddest, and most intense episodes yet!
