Eclipse, the third film in the
Twilight series is turning out to be a cast of female heavy-hitters as Oscar nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno has just been added to the Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson starrer, according to
The Hollywood Reporter.
Moreno will play Maria, an evil vampire who, during the Southern Vampire Wars, recruits and turns then-human Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) to join her army.
Best known as the title character from Maria Full of Grace, Moreno earned an Academy Award nomination for best actress in a drama for her portrayal of a pregnant 17-year-old Colombian who, after losing her job, agrees to become a drug mule who flies to New York with more than 60 pellets of cocaine in her stomach. Moreno lost the Oscar that year to Hilary Swank for her fierce turn in Million Dollar Baby.
Moreno joins an Eclipse cast that already includes Bryce Dallas Howard — who replaced Rachelle Lefevre as wicked vampire Victoria, who spends the bulk of the third film in the series in a quest to avenge the death of her vampire partner James by killing Stewart’s Bella, whose boyfriend Edward (Pattinson) turned James to dust.
In addition to Moreno's casting, Eclipse recently also added Jack Huston to its cast. He will play Royce King II, a human who lived during the Great Depression who was briefly engaged to Rosalie (Nikki Reed). Huston will be seen starting in the fall on ABC's Eastwick reboot starring Sara Rue, Rebecca Romijn and Lindsay Price.
New Moon, the second film in author Stephenie Meyer's best-selling series, opens Nov. 20. Eclipse is set to arrive in theaters June 30, 2010.
