Kevin Hart's Anti-Gay Tweets Resurface, Actor to Host 2019 Oscars

"And the Oscar for most homophobic host ever goes to..."

Just a day after his announcement to host the 2019 Acadamy Awards, actor and comedian Kevin Hart is already in hot water - again.

Screenshots of the comedian's using anti-gay slurs have resurfaced on Twitter, most dated between 2009 and 2011.

"Yo if my son comes home & try's 2 play with my daughters doll house I'm going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice 'stop that's gay,' the then 31-year-old wrote in 2011. "How many 'gay' men sweat when they wear dress shirts because real men don't lmao p.s fag," another tweet from 2009 reads.

Hart has a history of making homophobic "jokes."

"One of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay,” Hart said said in his 2010 special, Seriously Funny. “That’s a fear. Keep in mind, I’m not homophobic. . . . Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

Hart recanted the threat line in a 2015 Rolling Stone interview with a flimsy not-quite-apology. Hart says, "The funny thing within that joke is it’s me getting mad at my son because of my own insecurities — I panicked. It has nothing to do with him, it’s about me. That’s the difference between bringing a joke across that’s well thought-out and saying something just to ruffle feathers."

He continues, "I wouldn’t tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren’t as sensitive as they are now. I think we love to make big deals out of things that aren’t necessarily big deals, because we can."

So sincere!

LGBTQ moviegoers and critics are concerned over the choice to make Hart the 2019 Oscars host, especially considering the current visibility of the #MeToo movement and the number of queer films potentially in the running this year.

"And the Oscar for most homophobic host ever goes to..." tweeted The Guardian writer Benjamin Lee. "Considering how many of the Oscars' biggest fans are women and gay men it's quite something for the Academy to hire a guy who beat one wife, cheated on another when she was eight months pregnant and said one of his biggest fears is his son growing up and being gay," wrote Awards Watch Founder Erik Anderson.

It's frustrating for many to see another domestic abuser's career still intact, perhaps even more so that the Academy Awards is complicit in giving Hart a paycheck and platform.
