Pura Vida?

Instagram personalities Max Emerson, Andrés Camilo, Barrett Pall, Cheyenne Parker, and a few of their closest friends went on a trip to Costa Rica recently to promote the vacation rental company Luxury Retreats.

With so many well-followed gay Instagram personalities, most of our feeds were dominated with photos of the men flaunting on beaches, parading on ATVs, and posing next to tropical waterfalls. The men even organized specific days to feature one of the men more prominently on social media than the others (don’t worry, everyone got their turn!)

They went kayaking:

New York-based writer, actor, and comedian Tim Murray decided enough was enough and parodied the trip by Photoshopping himself into seventeen of the mens’ photos.

“I saw how much traction Max Emerson’s Costa Rica photos were getting and I thought it would be fun to pretend like I was there, but instead of trying to look hot I would be...wearing roller blades and a Xanadu onesie,” the 29 year-old comedian said, discussing why he chose to poke fun at the trip

He continued:

“Then it snowballed into, 'How many ridiculous situations can I try to create out of these photos?' The more gorgeous, shirtless, and serious these models looked, the more ridiculous I wanted to look.”

“I find gay instagram culture interesting,” Murray said. “ On one hand I totally get it. We’re all going to be 90 someday (except me, because I drank Isabella Rossellini’s potion) so why not take as many photos of ourselves looking great now? And if someone feels beautiful, I think it’s great that they want to celebrate that.”

“On the other hand, I’ve had body image issues my whole life, and lately I feel like there’s too much reward given to physical beauty (especially in the gay community) and not enough to comedy, intelligence, and creativity (among other things),” Murray confessed. So I Photoshopped myself jumping like a dolphin in front of hot people. Did I fix it?”

“I’ve known Max for over ten years so I knew he would think this was a fun gag and when he saw me post the first few pictures he was all about it,” Murray said of his relationship with the main target of the parody. “We’re living in a scary time and the fact that I even had these types of pictures to parody is a great thing. Hundreds of thousands of people are seeing these men with their boyfriends. That kind of exposure can be very helpful to closeted kids. I just hope that those kids also see the Cole Escola’s of the world and know that being funny and smart has tremendous value too.”

“These beautiful models sunbathing in Costa Rica obviously have value to their followers and so do those of us who don’t look the way they do or don’t have the desire to take photos like that,” Murray said. “Any queer person succeeding in any way is a victory right now and we can continue to celebrate these guys, but also make fun of them.  But what do I know? I’m just a high-jumping dolphin swimming by models in Costa Rica. And holy cow is it beautiful here.”

Whether the six models or Murray had more fun on the trip is up for debate, but you can already hear the “take me back” posts uploading to your Instagram home page.
